Is There Caffeine in Decaf Coffee?
Decaffeinated coffee or decaf is a popular choice for many people. However it is not entirely caffeine free. You can still find anywhere between 5 and 12mg of caffeine in a regular decaf coffee. Some people choose to drink decaf because they are sensitive to caffeine and some because they enjoy the taste of coffee but do not want the hightened energy levels.
Coffee is decaffeinated when it is unroasted (green beans) and there are different methods to achieve the lower levels of caffeine. This is done either with solvents and water or without solvents, such as the Swiss Water Process which uses charcoal.

Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant, when consumed the body can fully absorb caffeine within 30 minutes. It can have an effect on mood, energy levels and even brain function. The effects of caffeine generally last around 3 hours from the time of consumption.
Many people use caffeine as a stimulant every single day and some people may claim it is essential for their every day function. Drinking coffee is the most popular way to get caffeine, which is why coffee is considered an important part of many peoples mornings across the world. This is because the stimulant effects of caffeine may help in reducing feelings of tiredness or fatigue.
How Much Caffeine is Safe?
According to the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) 400mg of caffeine in any 24 hour period is considered too much. This works out at 4 to 5 cups of coffee. While many people will not experience any negative effects consuming this amount of caffeine those that are senstivie to caffeine can have a number of negative or uncomfortable side effects, these include;
- Increased Heart Rate
- Upset Stomach (Nausea)
It is important to consider that some health conditions may also make you more sensitive to caffeine and cause unwanted side effects.
When consuming any amount of caffeine for a prolonged period of time it is possible that you will experience caffeine withdrawl symptoms. These range from slight feelings of nausea to headaches. The body becomes familiar with caffeine and the effects can become less noticeable over time but when you stop consuming caffeine you may begin to experience these side effects.
